Huion Inspiroy H610X - review on GNU/Linux

Review of the screen-less, medium sized and budget friendly Huion Inspiroy H610X. I'm testing the pressure sensitivity, the resistance of the overlay, and the feature of the device. I'm using Krita on GNU/Linux Debian, but this video is about the hardware, so it should be informative even if you plan for using the device on something else.

Shit. I've been using #iOS in all its forms for about 15 years and I've only just discovered this text selection technique (by accident):

- Press-hold the shift key on the keyboard
- Then press-hold the spacebar
- Start dragging on the spacebar

And it'll do what you see in the attached video.

PS. I've known about press-holding the spacebar to activate the virtual trackpad to move the cursor for years but had never considered there would be keyboard modifiers for how to use it.

Closing the official BSL instance

While it was always planed (and disclosed as such since the beginning) I decided to close the official instance of BirdsiteLIVE a bit earlier than expected. Here's why.

The aim of the project

Since not everyone may be familiar with the project, let me clearly state my motivations for it.

On the fediverse there was (and maybe still is) a trend of creating public accounts combined with a crossposter to bring twitter content here. This is an issue in many ways: it pollutes local and federated timelines with ghosts accounts, it creates publicly available mirrors, and is not great for multiple other reasons.

After a lot of debates and discussions with other fediverse users, I decided to create a service that would fulfill this need (and ease up a fediverse migration) while operating on a private and “personal usage” philosophy. The fact that ActivityPub permits to publish content under “follower-only” mode was ideal in this regard.

So cool, problem solved, we just need to convince admins to clean up the remaining bots now? Well...

The blind spot

As many seasoned users of the fediverse, I never use the search functionality for other reasons than resolving full handles and URLs.

If you're not already aware of it, due to the decentralized aspect of the fediverse (and contrary to the centralized functionality of common social networks) search isn't really working the way you might think: due to technical limitations, it will only look into the known accounts of the instance, that is a limited to a very limited view of the fediverse depending on the size of your instance, the age of the accounts, etc. Since the most reliable way to find and follow an account is to provide a full handle (@user@domain) or the URL to the profile, my guess is we all end to ignore this flaw and stop thinking of it.

Until...

The arrival of unacclimated migrants from the Hellsite

(if you're one of them, before you jump to your phone to tell me how horrible person I am, I'm just messing with you, you're impolite, noisy and driven with the birdsite habit to create indignation posts to get visibility, but hey! You're the victim of those services. And now you're safe. There is no need to behave this way here, there is no algorithm to surf on and what you will find here is a (mostly) peaceful place where we discuss more than we throw 2 words arguments to each other to appear clever. Sincerely and unironically, welcome here)

The issue with newcomers is they manage to pass through the “choose your instance” dilemma, log in, happily find the new UI full of promises and... oh yeah. Use the search engine to see if some of their friends are here. Oh no.

Let's say I'm happy words aren't the most effective way to kill someone since they would still be feeding on my corpse currently. 😶

BSL accounts are meant to be used under an educated understanding of what it is, what it does and how it does it. This clearly can't be the case when displaying those accounts on a search result list at the “I just arrived” state of evolution to a proper fedizen. And I understand how it can lead to misunderstandings, doubts, disbelief, anger and other great sentiments that leads to harmony and peaceful exchanges.

The fix

There is a solution that would fix this issue, I've reached Mastodon's dev months ago and reached them recently again to add a new label on the bots so that they don't appear on a partial search and only when using full handles / URL (you can't guess them, if you're in possession of one, you know what it is).

I'm sure they're very busy (and a bit mad at me too!) and that's ok, but the thing is the issue is still here currently. And that, that's not ok.

Closing the instance

So yeah. I'm closing it. Not much to say here. It's the best solution in my reach currently. I just hope people won't create again crossposters everywhere in response (if you read this, please don't).

If you're an instance owner

Please consider restricting the usage and availability of your instance, at least until a better solution is found and available.

The best way to use the software currently (in the way it was meant to be used), is to restrict it to a personal instance (or a small instance of seasoned users) and prevent other instances to be able to reach it (via ACLs, Firewall rules, etc) to prevent the creation of searchable accounts.

Also since the software isn't working in a truly private way due to this flaw, it could be a good thing that you check Twitter API conditions again and decide if you think those are still met, or not, and act consequently. There is diverse opinions about it, and I don't want you to trust my understanding of it (not a lawyer, etc).

What if I'm still mad at you?

Oh yeah. You can still write me delicate brutalities that you guys excels in (be original and entertaining please!). But while I lived in many countries, I'm still French in my DNA and I might answer with the best way, we, French people, deal with such content:

Delicate and educated french men from Monty Python showing a deep respect for his interlocutor

Jokes aside, I hope this article will help people to understand what BSL is, maybe stop harassing admins about it, and help evacuate some steam from everyone. You're free to share it, obviously.

And if you're one of those newcomers, again, welcome here, I'm sure you'll love your stay among us.

A recent report has proven that Telegram sticks to its promise of keeping its user data private, while apps like #WhatsApp give real-time user data to third parties, and despite their numerous claims about "E2E encryption", can also disclose message contents.

The report has confirmed that #Telegram is one of the few messaging apps that doesn't breach their users’ trust.

I am not surprised. Most other apps couldn't guarantee #privacy to their users even if they wanted to. Because their engineers reside in the US, they have to secretly implement backdoors in their apps when the US government orders them to. If an engineer speaks publicly about it, then can go to jail for breaching a gag order.

In most cases the agencies don't even need a court order to extract private information from messaging apps such as WhatsApp, and in other cases, court documents are shrouded in secrecy. Some supposedly secure apps have been funded by government agencies from their inception (e.g Anom, Signal).

For many years the National Security Agency (#NSA ) has been making sure that international encryption standards are in line with what the NSA can decipher, and all other approaches to #encryption are labeled as "non-standard" or "home-brew". Through their proxies in the encryption industry (like this one), the NSA imposed flawed standards onto the encryption used by the rest of the world, cautioning everyone else from "rolling out their own encryption".

No wonder US-based apps such as WhatsApp are plagued with backdoors – intentionally planted security loopholes that governments (and anybody else) can use to hack smartphones and extract private data from people.

I hear our US-based competitors are frustrated that they can't match Telegram's growth, despite heavily investing in marketing (something Telegram has never had to invest in). But in order to match our growth, they have to first make sure their actions match their marketing claims. Until then, data breaches and security issues in their apps will, unfortunately, remain unavoidable.

Reuters: Amazon Kowtowed to P.R.C. and Removed All Reviews of Xi Jinping’s Book in China

Steve Stecklow and Jeffrey Dastin, reporting for Reuters:

Amazon.com Inc was marketing a collection of President Xi Jinping’s speeches and writings on its Chinese website about two years ago, when Beijing delivered an edict, according to two people familiar with the incident. The American e-commerce giant must stop allowing any customer ratings and reviews in China.

A negative review of Xi’s book prompted the demand, one of the people said. “I think the issue was anything under five stars,” the highest rating in Amazon’s five-point system, said the other person.

Ratings and reviews are a crucial part of Amazon’s e-commerce business, a major way of engaging shoppers. But Amazon complied, the two people said. Currently, on its Chinese site Amazon.cn, the government-published book has no customer reviews or any ratings. And the comments section is disabled.

I don’t know why the Chinese government is so sensitive about this. Even here in the U.S., where we’re free to leave whatever reviews we want on Amazon for Xi’s book, it’s rated 4.7/5 after nearly 2,000 reviews. Seriously, go look.

On Telegram, people can publicly express reasonable concerns about #vaccines . Large Telegram #channels are one of the few remaining places on the Internet where users can raise their voice against various anti-Covid measures, which they feel have restricted their rights.

What #Telegram does not allow, however, is the distribution of calls for violence via public channels. Inciting #violence has been prohibited by the Terms of Service of Telegram since 2015, so we take action every time this line is crossed. Yesterday we had to shut down an Italian channel "stopdittatura", which incited subscribers to harm medical doctors and other public officials related to vaccinations. Unfortunately, the channel admins failed to act even after our team warned them about the violation.

We also had to block a similar German public channel "menschenreise_diskussion", which, just like "stopdittatura", had over 40,000 subscribers and actively incited violence against doctors. Such channels violate Telegram's rules, the rules of Apple and Google and also local laws.

It's OK to fight for your rights.
It's not OK to harm other people.

@Norz Tech In my opinion this is a huge fallacy in this context. There's many technical, objective and subjective perspectives we can take on this topic that don't require any attachment to a person. More importantly, traits or history of a person don't necessarily transfer over to their (future) work. That they do forever is a pretty bold assumption really.

Signal is a great example here, its leader is a highly opinionated person, many of his opinions I cannot share. But his work is open source and peer reviewed. We can understand the full architecture and its implementation and reason it objectively. Just being able to do this is already a huge bonus over Telegram where we can only do this partially.

If Telegram decides to do something we don't like, it's live with it or leave it. If Signal does, we could fork it entirely.

Now both Telegram and Signal made the architectural decision to use a central service and phone numbers as an identifier. There's certain trade-offs on why they did it and its pretty subjective on whether you prefer paying those trade-offs vs. paying the trade-offs a decentralized approach like XMPP or Matrix imposes. But non of that judgement is dependent on "who made this".

So I've been hearing "the guy who made is cool" for years as the only argument towards why Telegram is better than anything else. I just don't buy it, it's an entirely empty argument to me.

Comment copied & pasted :

Yes, I understand your point of view. Needing to trust one person makes the decision quite fragile.
However, currently #Telegram 's features make it valuable to me : mobile and desktop clients with server sync, html export, etc.
I guess if I learned that they start selling user data, I would progressively migrate to another messaging service, like I did with Facebook and Google's.

I appreciate though that the progress that #Signal and #Threema make towards feature-rich user-friendly messaging services.

"There is no good reason for #Google to do this, other than to force people to use #Chrome."
bodhi.fedoraproject.org/update…
Google has announced that it is cutting off access to the Sync and "other Google Exclusive" APIs from all builds except Google Chrome. This will make the Fedora Chromium build significantly less functional (along with every other distro packaged Chromium). It is noteworthy that Google gave the builders of distribution Chromium packages these access rights back in 2013 via API keys, specifically so that we could have open source builds of Chromium with (near) feature parity to Chrome. And now they're taking it away. The reasoning given for this change? Google does not want users to be able to "access their personal Chrome Sync data (such as bookmarks) ... with a non-Google, Chromium-based browser." They're not closing a security hole, they're just requiring that everyone use Chrome.

Or to put it bluntly, they do not want you to access their Google API functionality without using proprietary software (Google Chrome). There is no good reason for Google to do this, other than to force people to use Chrome.

I would say that you might want to reconsider whether you want to use Chromium or not. If you want the full "Google" experience, you can run the proprietary Chrome. If you want to use a FOSS browser that isn't hobbled, there is a Firefox package in Fedora.

Let's learn this "open-source" lesson. Let's go #FreeSoftware, #CopyLeft, #GPL, etc.

#Signal is fully #OpenSource (#Telegram server is not) and run by an NGO.
It has the best ratio of security & privacy VS usability & mass adoption. So go for it ;)

  • ...

Excellent promotion of another instance of irresponsible propaganda and censorship. I posted this comment and author to deleted it for better advertising. The illusion of freedom sells well. One has to secretly delete comments so as not to spoil one’s money-making business by speculating on free speech and violation of ToS.

I repeat:

  • There is a special account on the diasp.org server. This account engages in targeted democratic propaganda on behalf of a dead person:
    diasp.org/u/robertantonwilson
It uses another person's photo and has used another person's name - Robert Anton Wilson. The fact is that the real RAW was exposing democratic propaganda, here is example:
    68747470733a2f2f757373722e77696e2f636c6f75642f726f62657274616e746f6e77696c736f6e7261772f7261775f71756f74655f70725f64656d6f6372612e6a706567
Real RAW is the saint of my religion. For me, this kind of SEO discrediting is a terrible sacrilege. I tried to discuss the matter with the owner of that account - and was blocked and my comments was removed. My guess is that this account is a deliberate wellpaid Search Engine Optimization for discrediting of the legacy of the real Robert Anton Wilson. Also, this account has often participated in the synchronised promotion of the aforementioned girl hactivists and is fully in line with their agenda. There is a good chance that these are all virtual accounts of the same organisation.
Then i discovered that the server rules prohibit such virtual activity: "Accounts that are not clearly marked as such and that impersonate other people without permission can be deleted without warning."
I wrote to support of this pod and, as a result, the account changed its name from "Robert Anton Wilson" to "The Very Real Robert Anton Wilson" (without changing stolen photo) and support told me that the account was now a "parody account" rather than a rule-breaking one. Such a change in the name of the account (but not the address) - did not harm the SEO ranking. In my opinion, this shows the solidarity of the administrators with the owners of this account.
diasp.org is one of the big pods. But he is blocked in the Russian Federation. As a result, the federation network is broken, with the result that any server physically located in the RussianFed cannot communicate normally with other diaspora servers. This server is blocked because of this page:
    diasp.org/posts/357f38e0ed4101…
This account has only this one post with political child porn comix. I have written about this account and i am also aware that other russian-speaking users have written to administrators to make this account hidden or to change the address to remove the block and restore the federation. But administrators simply ignore these requests.
The server rules prohibit such content with the first clauses: "Pornographic content of any kind; Artistic content that depics minors or images/language that sexulises minors;". I don't know what exactly is the reason for ignoring repeated appeals from russian-speaking users about this drawn political child pornography - the political solidarity of the administration (this comic seems to be anti-republican) or the desire to continue of break the federation with russian-speaking users due to their racist preferences. But the fact remains that this post violates their own rules, but that doesn't bother them.

Also this server is busy systematically deleting my comments and postings, exposing well-paid propaganda and collecting donations to sell “freedom”.

Well this is refreshing..don't think I've ever been to a site that recommends using an adblocker. Awesome! Way to be botwiki.org!
1 1

This is funny and also worrisome as it may actually mean the fediverse will be his last resort
1 1

how does one get banned from Shopify?! maybe trolling the forums? idk

he'll probs end up at one of those "free speech" silo platforms. if he does end up on a federated platform, he'll just find himself isolated and/or in some fedi bubble of supporters/tolerators.

Apple Gives Parler 24 Hours to Implement a Moderation Plan or It Will Be Removed From the App Store

From Apple’s letter to Parler, as published by BuzzFeed News:

We require your immediate attention regarding serious App Store guideline violations that we have found with your app, Parler.

We have received numerous complaints regarding objectionable content in your Parler service, accusations that the Parler app was used to plan, coordinate, and facilitate the illegal activities in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021 that led (among other things) to loss of life, numerous injuries, and the destruction of property. The app also appears to continue to be used to plan and facilitate yet further illegal and dangerous activities.

Our investigation has found that Parler is not effectively moderating and removing content that encourages illegal activity and poses a serious risk to the health and safety of users in direct violation of your own terms of service, found here: https://legal.parler.com/documents/Elaboration-on-Guidelines.pdf

It’s just a chef’s kiss to encapsulate so much with “(among other things)”. Consider what it includes: the breakdown of society, an attempted coup, the disgrace of our nation in the front of the world, all the way down to evidence of poor personal hygiene. Truly a parenthetical for the ages.

Twitter Permanently Bans Trump

Twitter:

After close review of recent Tweets from the @Donald J. Trump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

Behold his account. It’s a beautiful thing to see. We never have to read another Trump tweet again.

Can I just take a moment, while we’re dancing on his Twitter account’s grave, to talk about how stupid the “real” prefix in his account handle was? Even the way it was camel-cased was stupid and cut-rate.

Anyway, good fucking riddance.

@tik

@neqone Happy to hear your experiences! Just a note: elementary OS does not use GNOME, GNOME Shell, or the GNOME panel. ;) The top panel is codenamed “WingPanel” and designed and developed by elementary.

@neqone (Unless you were talking about something else, in which, case, our bad!) Regardless, if there is an unexpected behavior, we welcome you to open System Settings → About → Report a Problem to file an issue with the developers. 😀

@elementary I guess I can log it although not sure of repeatability (although I guess it happened twice on same machine so...)

@elementary @neqone Swapped too on a macbook pro, and works a dream !

@bemused_geek @elementary I'm pretty content with older macOS (down hill since High Sierra) but Big Sur right now should be called Big Sucks. Only thing running on Apple Silicon though so that Mac is stuck with it. Just like having supported OS on older hardware that's still usable. Perf wise Elementary👍

@neqone @elementary I still had El Capitan on mine and as its 2011 macbook pro I thoght I would try out Elementary and wow its a great OS, so am keeping it 😀

@bemused_geek @elementary Yeah later macOS versions felt too sluggish on it. I flashed it back to Sierra to do a reset not realizing the standard paths to get it to High Sierra or higher were then gone. So Elementary is giving me a chance to have supported OS that feels as light on it as Sierra

@neqone @elementary Yes i lost that too ! couldnt re download.

@Sabo_Taj @neqone Yeah fair! 😂 It’s just a persistent misconception that can lead people down rabbit holes, and they might not know that we develop—and thus can improve—it.

@elementary @neqone When will we have the blur effect? 😀

Digital Wellbeing

I just updated my phone to Android 9 Pie, thanks to its endless notifying and nagging. Most of all, I'm thankful it didn't screw with the existing interface too much. But it came with this new “Digital Wellbeing” feature and, naturally, I have some thoughts.

According to the article I read this morning before begrudgingly downloading this latest update, Google wants you to “be well” on your phone through some RescueTime-esque screen-time tracking. Apparently, giving you statistical candy like this is supposed to make you more “digitally well.”

I remain skeptical.

Just as when you first start tracking how many “steps” you take in a day with the latest fitness-tracker-gizmo, or you get an app on a screen that tracks the time you spend staring at a screen, a data tool like this is irresistible. We love numbers that we're told might illuminate some hidden insight into our lives; some part of us that our closest friend — the smartphone — might know that we somehow don't.

I just find it a little ironic.

Of course, I'm biased. On a philosophical level, I don't think we should need this thing to know that we stare at our phones too much. Instead, just look up every once in a while and see how many friends around you are annoyed or a little distant because you've been playing Candy Crush in their midst. Just think about the last memory you have of a vacation or your child that isn't recorded in a photo or video (now posted on Facebook, naturally). Just think about any time you should've been happy to be in a beautiful place, but maybe felt a little down because you didn't get enough likes on your Instagram photo of that place.

I would say that self-reflection is forever accessible to us all, and like all good things: free!

But that's it, isn't it? There's no money to be made on that sentiment. The mobile economy starts to break down if we stop believing we need these things. And so we quantify every second spent on our smartphoneslotmachines and now have pretty screens that tell us how many times we've pulled the lever (I've unlocked my phone six times since I upgraded!). Like some kind of organic label to slap on our food, now we build feel-good “digital wellbeing” into our operating systems.

What a time to be alive.

Of course, I understand some people need features like this. Not everyone can be so vigilant of their digital intake. I personally take extra pains to limit the damage my device can do, because I'm fortunate enough to know what goes into the pudding, so to speak. I do things like telling friends and family that they shouldn't expect text message replies — especially not within a reasonable time. I never take my phone off vibrate, and I make a habit of leaving it in any room that I'm not in. I don't take it with me when I walk my dog in the evening, and I don't look at it when I'm in the company of others. My home screen looks like this:

(Thanks to AIO Launcher, first mentioned to me by @ploum)

I understand not everyone can be so lucky, for one reason or another, and I'll afford the possibility that this “Digital Wellbeing” feature can shed some light on people's habits, for those that might not otherwise realize it.

But it doesn't mean that it isn't absurd to need such a feature, or that this is anything more than a band-aid for the inherent design flaws in our shiny glass slabs or — more pressingly — the manipulative software running inside them. Indeed it's not the end-user's fault they can't stop looking at their screen, as this “wellbeing” purports, but the designers who put such potent technology in their hands in the first place. And while motivating many companies, designers, and developers to change their ways across countless apps may be a huge undertaking, it's still one I think is worth thinking about.

Do you know someone on Diaspora who is looking to transition to the Fediverse?

✅ The social media platform Friendica lets you follow both Fediverse accounts on Mastodon etc, but also Diaspora accounts. You can find out more at friendi.ca or find a public server to sign up on at dir.friendica.social/servers

Diaspora's current developers seem to have ruled out ever linking up with the Fediverse, so Diaspora is becoming ever more isolated 😞
